Wujal Wujal
The people of Wujal Wujal are known as the
Kuku Yalanji tribe. Wujal Wujal meaning "land of plentiful
water" is located on the Bloomfield Track south of Cooktown.
Wujal Wujal was formerly known as the Bloomfield River
Mission. In 1886, the mission began only to be abandoned in
1902. The people then scattered to camps within the area and
went through a long unsettled period in regards to their
future. In 1980, the Aboriginal Council was formed and the
area regained its traditional name.
Wujal Wujal is a
beautiful place situated in the middle of the rainforest. The
centrepiece of this community is Wujal Falls, a most sacred site
for its people. The people call themselves "freshwater
people" for all the crystal clear water running through the streams
and rivers in the forest.
The members of Black Image are from the Dikarrba and Balwggarr
Warra (Gulgi Galbay) clans from their father's side.
