Hope Vale

Map Hope Vale is situated 46 kilometres north of Cooktown and was established as a Lutheran Mission in 1949. The Aboriginal people from the Hope Valley and Bedford Missions were settled here.

Consisting of the Guugu Yimithirr clan and speaking this language,
the Hope Vale community also comprises a number of different clans. The members Black Image are the Dhuupi Warra and Dharrpa Warra clans from their mother's side.

The traditional lands of the Guugu Yimithirr people lie between the Annan River, south of Cooktown, north to the Jeannie River and to the west of Battle Camp.

Hope Vale The magnificent land surrounding Hope Vale covers freshwater springs, palm tree lined rivers and beautiful bright sand dunes.  Hope Vale itself is made of rich red soil.  The unique coloured sands near Elim display shades of yellow, black and red.

Prominent Aboriginal leaders and brothers Noel and Gerhardt Pearson are from Hope Vale as are North Queensland Cowboys Matt and Brenton Bowen.
