Hope Vale
Hope Vale is situated 46 kilometres north of Cooktown and was established as a
Lutheran Mission in 1949. The Aboriginal people from the Hope Valley and Bedford
Missions were settled here. Consisting of the Guugu Yimithirr clan and speaking
this language, the Hope Vale community also comprises a number of different
clans. The members Black Image are the Dhuupi Warra and Dharrpa Warra clans from
their mother's side. The traditional lands of the Guugu Yimithirr people
lie between the Annan River, south of Cooktown, north to the Jeannie River and
to the west of Battle Camp.
The magnificent land surrounding Hope Vale covers freshwater springs, palm tree
lined rivers and beautiful bright sand dunes. Hope Vale itself is made of
rich red soil. The unique coloured sands near Elim display shades of yellow,
black and red. Prominent Aboriginal leaders and brothers Noel and Gerhardt
Pearson are from Hope Vale as are North Queensland Cowboys Matt and Brenton Bowen.
