Black Image formed in
1997. The members hail from three indigenous communities of
Hopevale, Wujal Wujal and Coen. The all indigenous band consists of
five brothers and one cousin. The two lead guitarists are Vincent
Harrigan and Anselm Harrigan with Dylan Harrigan on lead vocal and
rhythm guitar, Damien Harrigan on vocals and clap sticks, Clifford
Harrigan on drums and Quinton Walker on bass guitar. Their music
consists of reggae, rock, blues, funk, country, Indigenous rock and
their own originals.
Black Image performed their first gig at the local pub in
Cooktown with many of the members still under the age of eighteen.
Since then Black Image have performed in many Indigenous
communities and townships across Cape York.
In 2002 Black Image released their first album titled Durrbil/
Dikarrba. Durrbil meaning red soil in the Guugu Yimithirr from
their mother's side and Dikarrba meaning the Thompson Creek area of
Wujal Wujal in the Kuku Yalangi language from their father's side.
The album took their music to many parts of Australia via the
Indigenous radio stations.
With the album out, Black Image were gaining larger audiences at
their gigs. Performances included the Music Oz Awards, the Woodford
Folk festival, the Village Festival in Yeppoon and the Laura Dance
festival just to name a few. Black Image has also supported acts
such as country band the Wolverines, Troy Cassar-Daley, Coloured
Stone and Yothu Yindi.
In 2004 the song Beautiful Land and Sea was released on a
compilation CD called the Indigenous Saltwater Songs.
